Let’s invite curiosity to lead the way!
My Own ADHD Journey
A few years ago, you would have found me working as a registered dietitian and climbing the corporate ladder at a Fortune 500 company. I was already coaching (as I had been for nearly 15 years), but instead of focusing on exploring personal values, character strengths, and the impacts of ADHD, the focus was on calorie needs, portion sizes, and nutrition labels.
Meeting with patients to review their lab results and talk food felt effortless; I could do it all day long. However, charting these conversations was another thing. Despite having every intention of completing my documentation by the end of each workday, invariably, the end of the workday seemed to sneak up on me and catch me off guard.
I remember feeling so frustrated, so confused, and so wholly inadequate. Why was it that I could successfully do it all – review labs with patient, attend staff meetings and complete all my documentation for the day – some days but not others? It didn’t seem to matter how many different ways I tried to navigate my checklist of monthly tasks, I just couldn’t do them all.
Fortunately, I had a friend who was relentless in her suspicions that she thought I might have ADHD. After taking a trip where she sensed I was at my breaking point, she invited me to a local coffeehouse one Saturday morning and armed with evidence, she shared her favorite articles that described how ADHD can “show up” in females. I didn’t like it, but I couldn’t help but notice how well I could relate to many of the signs/symptoms that were described.
